Argentina Zorzal Gran Terroir

Malbec 2014 $750

Grape: 100% Malbec
Region: Tupungato Valley, Mendoza, Argentina
You’ll taste/smell: Here’s a super star malbec, this one is bold, complex, you immediately taste the velvety layers of a fine young red. Bring to a fancy dinner with your friends.
Good to have it with: a BBQ, steak dinner.
Best to have it: 60-65 ºF, 15-18ºC

Deep red with violet tones in color. Great aromatic intensity and complexity, with plenty of mineral quality, oregano, flowers and an excellently balanced contribution of lactic aromas provided by the wood. On the palate enters broadly but with good acidity that makes it very fresh and lively, with textured tannins. It is a wine with a lot of nerve and a long, sweet finish.

The vineyard where this variety is grown is situated 1300 meters above sea level. It is a young vineyard, planted on chalky soils, with a very pronounced slope. This helps to keep the ground healthy because there is no accumulation of water or frosts. The climate is mountainous, so we have a very wide temperature range, resulting in grapes with thicker skins. Founded in 2007, Zorzal is devoted to the production of luxury wines. In 2008, the winery completed production under contract, and in 2009, completed the first vintage on new state-of-the-art equipment.

The highest winery in Mendoza, Zorzal sits on a 70-hectare parcel (175 acres) of prime land in the heard of one of the finest wine growing regions in the world: the Uco Valley, 130 miles south of the city of Mendoza. Zorzal is a collaboration of Argentine owners and operators and Canadian investors.

Chile Morandé Gran Reserva

Cabernet Sauvignon $590

Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Maipo Valley, Chile
You’ll taste/smell: it’s a well balanced and complex Cabernet. You’ll taste plums and cherries, velvety tannins, if you like round rich Cabernets from California this is your value option.
Good to have it with: what do you have with a Cabernet? A nice steak dinner with mashed potatoes and grilled asparragus, every red meat you can think of grilling.
Best to have it: 61ºF, 16ºC

The color is a deep cherry red. Black and red fruits, such as plums, blackcurrants and cherries, with notes of fresh tobacco, cinnamon and roasted coffee beans on the nose complement the great body palate with abundant velvety tannins, rounded, delicious, persistent, balanced and complex. With great ageing potential..

The fruit comes from selected plots of the San Bernardo vineyard in the Maipo Valley, which is famous for the production of great-quality red wines. The loamy-clay soils of alluvial origin also have gravel in the third layer of the profile. The fresh, dry climate provides an ideal terroir for producing structured, elegant red wines with long persistence.

Harvesting takes place manually in 10-kilo crates and the clusters and berries are hand-selected in the winery. Prior to alcoholic fermentation, the must is macerated at low temperature for 3 days. The Bordeaux-style vinification is carried out with special delicacy to achieve good extraction of the fine tannins.

Roganto Winery arises from the passion for wine and for creating products of great expression. In the year of 1987, Rogelio Sánchez del Palacio and Antonio Luis Escalante Domínguez, given the passion they had for wine, undertook the ambitious project of launching their own winery. It wasn’t until 2001 that they released their first wine.

The vineyard is located in the San Jacinto Valley south of Ensenada, B.C. between the valleys of Santo Tomás and San Vicente. The vineyard is continuously expanding – it currently has 14 hectares for production and 10 hectares in the process of planting and development

Sommeliers will say “Roganto is like the devil: everyone talks about him but nobody has seen him”. This began to create a legend surrounding Roganto’s wines. In 2001 their annual production was 125 wine cases and by 2014 the winery has an annual production of 10,000 cases.
